Maha FDA Seizes Medicines From Drug Stores After Allegations Of ABMH

Pune, 11 May 2019: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Friday seized stocks of medicines from M/S Krushna Medico, a drug store, to check the quality of drugs sold at a heavy discount and ascertain its efficiency. The FDA has started taking samples of drugs from shops in Pimpri-Chinchwad after receiving complaints that medicines purchased by the patients were allegedly ineffective during treatment by doctors of the Aditya Birla Memorial Hospital (ABMH).

Mirror reported on the issue on Friday after ABMH wrote to the FDA demanding investigation into the quality of drugs being sold at pharmacies across the city. The hospital had come across discrepancies in the effectiveness of medicines after they observed no visible effect of the drugs bought by the families of a few patients it was treating.

The hospital management, during its own investigation, found that Krushna Medico sold medicines at a heavy discount, raising doubts that the drug could be spurious or substandard. According to ABMH, several medical shops around Pimpri-Chinchwad follow the same practices — and this could be just the tip of the iceberg.

On Friday, a total of 12 different medicine syringes were seized from the Krushna Medico. As the distributor of the drug store and ABMH is the same, the FDA has taken samples of the drugs from the hospital too. The samples have been sent to the laboratory for testing. The FDA is keeping vigilance and will randomly conduct checks in the market.

Talking to Mirror about the issue, ABMH’s chief executive officer Rekha Dubey said, “We have written to the manufacturing company about the discrepancies found. We are yet to receive a reply from them. We are just concerned about the health of the patients. FDA officials have even taken samples from the drug store in our hospital and we are fully cooperating with the authorities.”

Joint commissioner of FDA (drug) for Pune region, SB Patil, took immediate action after the issue was highlighted by Mirror. Patil shared, “After the news was published about medicines not giving desired results, orders were issued to inspect the allegations. The medicine stock has been seized from the Krushna Medico and also from ABMH as their distributor is the same. The samples seized have been sent for testing and we are waiting for a report. The investigations are on and we will be taking more samples of drug from the market.”Pune Mirror
