HP: Law On Generic Medicines Likely

Dharamsala, 10 Jan 2018: The new BJP government will consider bringing in a legislation to make doctors in the state to prescribe generic medicines.

Minister for Health and Family Welfare Vipin Parmar gave this information while talking to The Tribune today.

“Despite the government directions, many doctors were still prescribing branded and expensive medicines to the patients in the state. To curb the practice, I have asked the officials concerned to draft a legislation through which the doctors should be forced to write cheaper generic medicines. In case they still prescribe branded drugs, they should write a comment justifying their action”, the minister said.

Generic medicines have just salt names whereas many pharmaceutical companies were marketing these salts in different names and at varied prices ranges. The doctors, who are opposing the government move to force them to write generic drugs, maintain that if they write the salt names, the power to sell brands would go in the hands of chemists and they can fleece the patients.

The minister, however, said in the proposed legislation, they would also make provisions to break the doctor-chemist nexus.

Acknowledging the shortage of doctors, the minister said the previous government did not do anything to recruit doctors and improve health system in the state.

“Keeping in view acute shortage of doctors and paramedical staff in hospitals and medical college we have organized walk-in interviews. About 125 doctors are being recruited immediately. Besides, 200 ayurveda doctors would be recruited through the Himachal Pradesh Public Service Commission. Para medical staff was also being recruited”, the minister said.

To improve the infrastructure of hospitals special budget provisions would be made and help would also be sought from the union government, Parmar said. The Tribune
