FDA Calls for Halt to Unapproved Drugs Containing Oxycodone

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a Federal Register notice to halt the manufacture and distribution of unapproved single-ingredient immediate-release drugs that contain oxycodone.
Such products have not been evaluated by the FDA for safety, effectiveness, manufacturing quality, or appropriate labeling, including dosing information and warnings, and cannot be legally marketed in the United States, the FDA states in a press release.

APDCA seizes substandard Cofcin syrup worth Rs.6.5 lakhs from Gaba Pharma in Hyderabad

HYDERABAD : In another case of seizer of substandard drugs in Andhra Pradesh, the state drug control authorities (APDCA) have recently seized Cofcin (Chlorpheniramine Oral Solution BP) Syrup worth Rs.6.5 lakhs from Gaba Pharmaceuticals Private Limited in Hyderabad. Over the past few days, the APDCA has been actively working in pinning down the defaulting pharmaceutical units in the state.

Real or fake? Just dial an Interpol registry to find out
MUMBAI: No matter where you are in the world, you may soon be able to check if the medicine you just bought is a fake or genuine. An Interpol Global Register (IGR) has been created to allow consumers check the authenticity of certain medicines using their unique security features. First off the block on the initiative is PharmaSecure, a drug authentication technology company that has security coded more than one million packets of medicines produced every day in India.

Online Pharmacies Implicated In Counterfeit Drug Case Spanning Europe

The MHRA has announced that three men have been sentenced to 89 weeks imprisonment for laundering $400,000 generated by a fake online pharmacy selling counterfeit medicines.
The men were prosecuted as part of a wider investigation. From 2004 to 2009 they were laundering profits from a criminal online pharmacy website based in Cyprus. Says the MHRA, “The business was run by a UK criminal who set up a number of illegal online pharmacy businesses selling counterfeit and powerful prescription-only medicines from outside of the UK.”

Unique ID for medicine strips

AHMEDABAD: Prescription drugs will soon need to carry an authorised number that can authenticate the product in the Indian market where 20% medicines are fake. A unique ID along with a bar-code will be printed on the medicine strips. A task force on spurious medicines headed by the Gujarat Food and Drug Control Administration has suggested that drug companies must print the number to help users cross-check through an SMS.
